Columbus Lights up with Lanterns

children in columbus have been making wish lanternsIn order to re-ignite (hoho) a tradition that has not been observed for over ten years, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is organising the Lantern Parade once more, as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations. The parade itself consists of two main parts; in the first, home made wish lanterns on bamboo will be carried through the chosen parks by children from local recreation centres, and the second will see coloured lanterns released across the ponds and lakes in each park. Since it was announced that the parade is to go ahead, young people from all over the city in Ohio have been using recycled items to make the lanterns, such as milk cartons, bottles, paper and even beads, and have been encouraged to get actively involved and excited about the event on the 22nd September.
If you’re going to be lucky enough to be in Columbus around the time of this special day, and would like to take along some of our own wish lanterns to take to Ohio and to join in the festivities with, please do get in touch. Or, to share any photos or stories you may have from making your own lanterns, just drop us an email and we’ll get back to you, pronto.
