Appreciate your concerns - Wish Lanterns carry a clearly stated instruction not to release within 5 miles of an airport printed on the launching instructions enclosed with each lantern as well as being stated on our websites safety instructions page.

As an Operations manager for an airport in England, my staff and I have seen a steady increase in the number of these falling to earth on runways and taxiways. It is worth noting that there are legal issues with releasing these near airports, something not clearly displayed by all sellers. The CAA publishes guidance in CAP 736 which should be complied with in the interests of safety.

Thanks for your comment. We stand by our comment that the lantern can't come down to earth while the fuel cell is still alight.

I can't believe your attitude to these lanterns littering the countryside. I am a litterpicker myself and find it unacceptable that you are encouraging people to release litter into the atmosphere. Your attitude to the problems associated with these lanterns is arrogant and unhelpful as all you are really doing is trying to ease the conscience of purchasers of your products to increase your profits.

I do think that these lanterns are pretty when released, but eco friendly versions only should be sold, everything else needs banning!!

I very much disagree with the claim that a sky lantern can't come down to earth whilst the fuel cell is still lit. As soon as the fuel cell has burnt out to some extent it is no longer able to heat the air in the lantern efficiently and the lantern looses height. When the lantern, on its way down, lands somewhere there is a definite risk that it could start a fire. There was a case in Germany just last year in which a 10 year old boy died after a lantern which had landed on the roof of his house and started a fire. The risk of starting a fire may be miniscule, it's outcome could well be fatal.

I am also very concerned about the fire lanterns. We are asked a lot if we stock them at festivals but until somone can show me a design that doesn't address the 2 main issues, I feel reluctant to sell them.

1 - all the designs I have seen that are called 100% bio degradable have a loop of (non-bio degadable) metal wire that could easil entrap animals such as foxes, rabits , badgers........

2 - On all the instructions it says not to use anywhere near farm or woodland. This little disclaimer has always been ignored in my experience as I have only seen these lanterns used in rural areas.

Saying that they are better than drinks cans or cigarrette buts is totally irelevent.

All that being said they do look lovely, so if someone can come up with a solution to the problems then great.

I think this is a really good idea and a novel way to get your letter to Santa and his fairies. Please let me know when these are available. We have used wish lanterns in the past as a memorial to our Son Barney who died 5 years ago when he was 7 years old, we light one at Christmas, the anniversary of his death and his birthday - our way of sending a message to him. Our other children love watching it rise in the sky until it is nothing more than a dot.

It's all very well to claim that it's biodegradable, but what about while it's lying on the ground in between landing and rotting away - who's going to stop the livestock eating bamboo canes and paper in the meantime?

Also, just because it's hard to track and find the wire doesn't absolve your customers from any responsibility for littering.

My feeling is that these fall into the same category as fireworks - if you launch them you take responsibility for what happens when they land...

If I chuck a crisp packet out of my car window on the motorway it's going to be difficult for me to go back and find it, but it's still littering!

As the parents of the bride, we must comment on the 'wish lantern experience' at Scheugnet and Nick's wedding. This was a most awesome experience to be part of. We are from Cape Town, South Africa and it was a first for us. Well done to James - you are indeed a great photographer. Congratulations to Scheugnet and Nick - your wedding was exceptional.
