Students from Ranchi’s women college painted 25 Wish Lanterns in support of Chak De Dhony – their beloved cricket player. They wanted to show their support and cheer him before the game for the World Cup against Sri Lanka. As it turned out later, Chak De Dhony won the cup. However, before doing so, his fellow Indians were waving some 200 silk flags in front of his house and the women released 25 lanterns with good luck wishes. The students sketched De Dhony face on the lanterns and wrote the wishes underneath. They were going to release them on the evening before the big game. The celebration before the big day reached its high point around midnight until 2 am during which time people were drumming and cheering in the hometown of the cricket star. Imagine how overjoyed everybody was, when Chak De Dhony won the Cricket World Cup indeed. The celebrations were overwhelming. Apparently, the good luck wish worked and the lanterns really did their job.
This comes to show that lanterns are now not only a part of the Chinese culture, but they are used everywhere in the world serving the same purpose – wishing luck to people and spreading good energy.
