marking of the New Year, marking of the end of the celebrations for it, they have their own courting traditions with lanterns, they release them for good luck, and they release them with wedding wishes and so on. However, in one of the regions there, people light them with the hope of prosperity. This is taking place in South China Guangdong Province. There, people’s main produce is the sugar cane and so in their wishes for a prosperous year, they hang the lanterns on long sticks of sugar canes. Sometimes they hang 3 or 4 lanterns on a single stick.
These ancient eastern traditions are being adopted from people all over the world, and the releasing of lanterns have become very popular. The reason is that people really like the ambiance they create, the light is beautiful and they are very symbolic. People everywhere believe in wishful thinking and in the good energy sent around, so the releasing of lanterns seem to be a universal way of sending out there good vibrations. The other positive thing about the lanterns is that a group of people can participate in their lighting, thus creating a sense of togetherness.
