What’s in a name?

dragonWish Lanterns are also known as many other names, including Chinese Lanterns, Thai Lanterns, Sky Lanterns and even Flying Lanterns. But why is this simple product known as so many different names? Why isn’t it just a Wish Lantern? Well, it’s simple really, the lantern was in fact an item used frequently in Chinese and Thai festivals and celebrations as far back as the 3rd Century B.C.

The lanterns are an important part of Asian culture and are used most recognisably in the Chinese New Year Festival each year. The culture believes the release of the lantern will also release your worries and problems which is why everyone releases a lantern on Chinese New Year, it’s seen as a fresh start to the year for everyone.

So this is how people came to coin the term Chinese Lantern and the story is similar for the reasoning behind why people also call them Thai Lanterns, obviously because they are used in Thailand in festivals and celebrations as well.

The reasoning behind why people call them Sky Lanterns is because it is a literal translation of the Chinese characters that are used in Chinese Kanji, they are most commonly known as Sky Lanterns in the USA and also in China.

The term Wish Lantern was adopted by the lovely people of the United Kingdom as the lanterns are known to be ways to carry your wishes up into the sky. So it really doesn’t matter what you call them, all the lanterns perform the same job – creating beautiful moments to enjoy with your loved ones.
